The Georgia Apartment Association Government Affairs team works year round, not just during the legislative session, to monitor pending issues that would have a negative effect on the rental housing industry in Georgia. In conjunction with our outside consultants from Fiveash & Stanley, our staff and committee work to insure that our best interests are being considered when legislation is introduced.
There are numerous threats each year at the state and local level that would make the construction and/or management of apartment communities more difficult, and through long-standing relationships with many legislators on both sides of the aisle, we are able to convey to them the damage that could be done to an industry whose primary purpose is to provide quality rental housing to families in Georgia.
While GAA monitors state legislation, our membership in the National Apartment Association (NAA) allows us to keep our finger on the pulse of what is happening legislatively on a national level.
NAA, in partnership with the National Multi Housing Council (NMHC), maintains a full-time legislative staff that monitors national legislative activity and lobbies for our industry’s interest.
The NAA/NMHC Joint Legislative Program, which is the foremost proponent of the apartment industry, assures that owners and managers of multifamily rental units are able to engage government officials in constructive, ongoing dialogues and participate in policy decisions affecting their ability to provide housing to millions of Americans.
The National Apartment Association (NAA) and the National Multi Housing Council (NMHC) unite under the auspices of the NAA/NMHC Joint Legislative Program to support legislative and regulatory policies that enable the nation's 25 million apartment homes to continue to provide high quality homes that remain accessible and affordable.
The GAA works closely with the NAA/NMHC on federal issues affecting the multifamily rental housing industry, such as fair housing and environmental regulations. Annually the members and staff of the GAA travel to Washington, D.C. with apartment associations from across the country to carry our message to Capitol Hill and meet with members of the Georgia delegation.
The Georgia Apartment Association has had five members serve as Chairman of the NAA, and GAA Past President Jerry Wilkinson will be Chairman of NAA in 2012. Multiple others have served in important roles at a national level from Regional Vice President to Chairpersons of committees. The GAA maintains active involvement in most areas of NAA, but as an industry leader we are usually at the forefront of legislative issues.
